As of 1799 the Jewish people in Hoogezand and surroundings had a home synagogue to their disposal at the Kalkwijk. They rented this space from Sijtze Kalkema. In 1809 there is still talk of a rented synagogue at Kalkwijk.
There is talk of a synagogue at Martenshoek in a return of the Jewish Congregation dating 1814. This contradicts other information speaking of the purchase of a house in 1810 being furnished as synagogue. At the beginning of the 19th century quite a few attempts were made to start building a synagogue, but that only succeeded in 1854. This building was located at the Winschoterdiep.
After the war the synagogue was sold and demolished.
