Like everywhere else the first synagogue was in a family room. This was in Gerzon Arons' home. The oldest mentioned date is 1773, but it is likely that this home synagogue dates from 1750. Jewish people from surrounding areas such as Bunde, Wedde, Bellingwolde and Termunten attended this synagogue.
In 1802 the board of the Jewish Congregation Nieuweschans buys a house at the Achterstraat. They have probably rebuilt this house into a synagogue, because in 1811 the Jewish Congregation submits a request for a grant for the restoration of their synagogue. This building was located at the Achterstraat as well. Although the building has been restored in 1865-1866, it had become thus ruinous in 1925 that it wasn't used anymore.
The synagogue has been sold in 1934, and in 1968 the building was purchased by the Local Authority of Nieuweschans. The synagogue has been restored in 1973. Nowadays it is a reception room.
