Synagogues

Because of the relatively large distance to Appingedam visiting the synagogue would probably have been aggravating for the Uithuizer Jews.

In 1851 and 1860 we read in minutes of the Local Authorities that the Jewish people held their sermons in a house rented for that purpose. These sermons were also attended by the few Jewish people from the surrounding villages such as Usquert, t' Zandt, Uithuizermeeden and Kantens.

In 1887 the Jewish people had a synagogue built locally, which served in that capacity until 1930. The well-known religious teacher Jonas Levie Voorzanger from Veendam gave the consecration speech. In 1930 the building was sold and in 1933 it was broken down.
