Synagogues
In 1792 there is mention of a so-called home synagogue in Vlagtwedde. It was located in a room of Gompel Jacobs' home. He had bought the house in 1787. It is unknown how long the home synagogue has been used.
In the beginning of the 19th century it isn't mentioned anymore anyway. In 1866 the Vlagtwedder Jews request and obtain a grant for building a synagogue, but this does not result in the actual construction. In 1893 it is attempted to obtain the so-called transient home to establish a synagogue in it.
Apparently it was successful, because in 1896 subsidy is obtained for renovation of the synagogue and school. The members of the Jewish Congregation Vlagtwedde would later have had a home synagogue in the house of Mrs. Braaf-Sachs at the Kromme Elleboog. As of 1921 the synagogue in Bourtange was attended again.
